    Excellent information about menopause

This book is a must read for women who are struggling with the real life challenge of menopause — at all the stages. It talks about recent studies “with women” test subjects and some of the bad press on hormone replacement therapy. Highly recommend buying a copy.

A must read for women over 30 and the men that love them

If you’ve been denied HRT, this book is for you. The book starts by explaining the faulty study that is used as the reason doctors think HRTs cause cancer. This book is a real eye opener. I cannot recommend it enough. If I had more money, I would by a copy for every woman I know.

    I am learning

Some of you might laugh but I am a guy who is better trying to understand what my partner is going through. We have been in each others lives since we were both 16 in high school. Were now at an age where her body is changing and she is doing her best to adapt. This book helped me understand not only what she is going through but what a woman’s body has to deal with as it ages. It also helped me giver her suggestions and ideas so we can go through it together. We are now going to the gym, eating better and are looking to have a fulfilling life for the remainder of our years. Great Book!!

    Helpful information

This book is very informative and detailed about research, findings, prescription studies, and menopause itself. There’s so much information that it borders on needing a medical degree to understand it all BUT it’s written in way that you will still be informed and able to use the information to make informed decisions about your health.

Great book for a subject with historically minimal Amount of research, menopause !!! Also, at the AZ FemTech conference Lisa C Larkin, MD, FACP, MSCP, IF who is President of the Menopause Society gave a shout out to Dr Mary Claire Haver in October 2024. Woot! Woot!

    An important read

This is the first book I’ve read about menopause so please take this into consideration for my review.I learned so much from this book that it makes me wish that this information is taught in schools. I can’t believe there aren’t systemic structures to educate women about this topic. This book comprehensively outlines all of the symptoms and topics related to menopause and what you can do to address these needs. Read this book in your 20’s and keep reading-reading it throughout your life to maintain your awareness about your body! I feel like I would have made different life choices early on upon reading this book, but I know what I can do to still take measures to maintain my health as I age.I listened to the audiobook and endedi up ordering the hard copy. The author kept referencing tools and lists of providers that I want to easily refer to. Plus, as I mentioned, I want to be able to refer to it again. This book will now be a staple on my shelf.

    Well-researched and informative

Written by a woman OB/GYN, who deep-dived researched into menopause when she went into it and couldn’t find the help she needed. It’s very informative, gave me some great ideas on how to work on better nutrition at my age and exercise. It arms you with knowledge to self-advocate for yourself when you go to a physician and maybe he/she is not aware of the latest research in menopausal symptoms/remedies. The last half of the book is a “toolkit” with tons of symptoms of perimenopause/post-menopause that she goes through and explains, gives natural ideas to help, and then outlines the latest research into hormone treatment for that symptom as well as Rx or supplements available to help women through it. I learned a lot.

    Every woman should read this

Don’t think you’re too young to think about menopause, it’s happening whether you like it or not eventually, and it starts wayyy earlier than you thought! This book, is amazing. Not only does Doctor Haver clearly give facts, separating facts from fiction, but she also does a tremendous job explaining in detail what is happening, why it’s happening and what you can do about it.Each chapter starts with a short personal experience from women all over, and that really helps to validate the reader that it is NOT in your head, and that you are not alone if you’ve been dismissed or even misdiagnosed by doctors before.Seriously, every single woman needs to read this book and be proactive and prepared to advocate for her health and future. Menopause is inevitable, suffering through it is not!

    Very educational

I really appreciate all the information in this book. I also follow her Facebook page for continued updates on menopause. There is so much misinformation about perimenopause and menopause out there. I was looking for more medical advice and found this book. I learned a lot about the changes a woman’s body goes through as she reaches perimenopause along with ways to help with symptoms. Knowing the right supplements to use and why has helped my overall health. Also, understanding how to exercise to keep up muscle mass while not increasing cortisol has also been very beneficial. Most importantly, she talks about hormone replacement and while it isn’t for everyone, she does explain the previous studies, how they were conducted, interpreted and how they were misleading. Knowing that and then hearing from so many women who are benefiting from HRT, is reassuring.

    Lots of information

Read about this book in a magazine and have learned a lot. I am reading it now knowing i will use it as a resource later. It is interesting how much our medical care is siloed into separate parts of our bodies when a lot of it is connected.

    Finally Real Help for Menopause

This book is written by a medical doctor who practiced OB/GYN and then turned her focus to menopause. Science backed research and various approaches to treatment are shared in a simple and sensible order. It’s an easy read that summarizes options and everything to consider in the choices available. I highly recommend it for all women to understand how our hormones impact our body functions and along with nutrition, exercise, stress and sleep.

Very detailed on the science of what’s happening during menopause. Actually spends more time on perimenopause, would have been nice to have back then. But better now than never, so many doctors need to read this!

If you are 30 or older, buy this book!

I have followed Dr. Haver online for years. Although I did not realize how very much she would eventually help me. For context, I’m 43 years old, have not felt right since my second/last pregnancy 11 years ago and have gone to doctors to be offered, you guessed it, anti-depressants and told, “you’re a mom.” Initially, I followed the WHOLE30 diet years ago and had wonderful success when combined with fasting. Then, at 40…. nothing worked, I felt like I was going crazy, I work out, eat right, track everything. Went to my annual gyn appt and was told, “your labs are normal.” I’ve cycled through crazy diets, I’ve worked out 2x/day, I’ve given up entire food groups. With NO results. I began following Dr. Haver’s recommendations and while I feel better and am off medication, something was still off. Her website allowed me to find a new doctor and that doctor immediately ordered the labs recommended in this book, asked me REAL questions, and told me to read this book, and Forever Strong by Dr Gabrielle Lyon (who I also have followed for years.). I have a follow up appt following my labs, and just the knowledge from this book and my new doctor’s approach has me feeling hopeful, after years of feeling dismissed. My mother passed of an endocrine cancer, and had a hysterectomy and was scared off from taking estrogen for years. I now think this protocol could have saved her HEALTHspan. She was a victim of the false reporting of the WHI. And for YEARS I WANTED a hysterectomy and did not want to take hormones. Now I realize that is likely not the answer for me. So many women around me are suffering from this perpetuated, old, misguided misinformation. Everyone should read this book, follow her, listen to her and adhere to her advice. I have no doubt it would change an antiquated narrative. If your doctor does not follow her, get a new doctor. I drive 90 minutes one way now, and it is worth every, single minute. Dr. Haver is a voice for us all.

    What no one tells you

This book is great. No one told me about what happens during perimenopause -it’s just not talked about – so I learned SO much from this book. It’s an easy read and I kept yelling to my husband, “hey, this is just like me! I didn’t know this was a menopause symptom! Why didn’t my doctors tell me this was why?” I’ve been through so much testing, thyroid, lymes, etc, but it turns out it’s perimenopause. I understand what’s happening so much better. Highly recommend.

The book content is well researched and very informative. Unfortunately the book itself arrived from Amazon with marks on the cover. I’m disappointed to have paid for a new hard cover only to have it look like it was kicked around before packaging. I’d return it, but I need it for this week.

    A must read!

This book has been such a helpful resource as I’ve navigated through this wacky menopausal journey. I appreciated the chapter on how to talk to my doctor about labs I wanted and felt prepared to discuss my HRT options with her, after reading this book. I’ve shared this book with so many folks and have talked to my husband about what I’ve leaned too. The toolkit section is super helpful also, as it discusses an immense amount of symptoms that we could experience, and what to do to help relieve those symptoms. I’m so appreciative of this book and the suggestions it offers, the research that’s been done to help us, and most importantly that this topic has become more openly discussed so that we women have options. Let’s face it, menopause affects all of us in some capacity. We’re either going to go through it ourselves, or we have women in our lives who will go through it. Better to be armed with facts and helpful advice for smoother sailing through this stage of life. Highly recommend!

Dr. Mary Claire Haver just knew what we women needed, and this is it!

This book. I have read it and am reading it, again! I have bought it for friends and begged all the women in my life to read it. I was never prepared for this season of life and when one symptom at a time hit me, I never once thought, “Oh, this is the beginning of the menopause transition!” Instead, I was researching each symptom as it came and trying to navigate it in isolation while also worrying – Do I have early onset dementia? Am I going to go bald? Am I just gonna be overweight as I get older? Is sweating all night just a part of getting older? Is sleep just going to be next to impossible now? Etc., etc., etc. All of the symptoms were rooted in the same thing – the gradual loss of hormones. It all made sense, thanks to this book, and I learned tons more that I had never been told about. It’s a great intro to menopause book, a great return to as a reference book, and a great encouragement on top of everything else!

A must read as you approach mid-life and start to feel you health going off the rails. Read this book and you’ll likely know more than your primary care doctor about peri-menopause. Grateful to have found this!

I wish I had found this amazing resource sooner. So many of my problems were just lack of estrogen. Now that I’ve found this book I feel empowered to take control of my health. I have an understanding of what is happening in my body! At 52, I’m now having informed conversations about my health with my doctors. So grateful! I had frozen shoulder at 49 and 50 years old. I lived through so much pain. I never understood that was just low estrogen in my body. I love the passion that Mary Claire has. I bought the hard cover book and then bought it on audible to listen as well. I’m busy, and struggle to have time to sit to read, so loved the audible version. Read by the author, you can tell she just wants to help and inform all women! It felt like a friend coming through! I loved having the book to highlight questions for my doctor and things I wanted to refer back to. I follow her now on Instagram. Grateful to have such a passionate women in our corner educating us. I will tell every 30 – 40 year old women I know about this book. I wish I had this information a lot younger then I did. So important to understand what is happening in our bodies; I was clueless!! I have already been telling my 20 year old daughters about menopause. We need to be talking about this stuff and not suffering silently! COME ON LADIES, let’s help each other!!!

One Chapter needs a little more information

Dr. Mary Claire has really helped me understand my perimenopause symptoms and helped me to be an advocate for myself. One chapter needs a little more information on it is the recommendation on getting a calcium score test done. Patients need to know that Calcium test or CAC isn’t a desirable test because it doesn’t show soft plaque. Soft plaque is what causes stenosis of the coronary arteries and is only seen on a CTA. If I have high cholesterol and high LDLs and go and get a CAC, test, and it comes back zero that doesn’t mean I am not a risk for coronary artery disease. For example, if I go on Lipitor, a statin drug, and my calcium score is zero and I go back and get a CAC in a couple of months of being on Lipitor, your calcium score of zero will go up! My doctor told me that statin drugs are raising people’s CAC scores! When his patients see this they can’t understand why this is happening. Statin drugs harden the soft plaque. Soft plaque, the plaque that is more thrombogenic, is hardened from statin drugs and now is calcified plaque. Thus, bringing up your calcium score. I highly recommend a CTA and not a CAC. CTA will show soft plaque and where it is. The location of the soft plaque, too is very important. My own mom had a very high CAC score because she was on Lipitor for years. Research has proven this with a large analysis of the MESA dataset that demonstrated that statins are associated with increasing CAC score.

HRT is the best treatment for most women FOREVER

I have been on Hormone Replacement Therapy since I was 16 years old. Those first decades of HRT were of course called Birth Control Pills (BCP). My father was an OB/GYN and my mother a famous pediatrician. HAHAHA, my mother was not Dr Spock. Both of my parents understood the science of HRT. Both understood that BCP is a stronger form of HRT. Sadly my mother quit HRT when she was about 70 due to the faulty science of clinicians such as Dr Susan Love, MD who enjoyed big following due to faulty science attacking HRT. My mother died 2 years ago of Alzheimers. Her retirement years became a misery due to dementia. No, HRT does not 100% prevent dementia. But it sure is a fantastic benefit to most aspects of the lives of most women. Knowledge is power and know that HRT helps maintain better health for most women as long as it is started early enough and even continued.

It’s good, but there are no in-line citations

This is a fantastic book and a great reference, BUT there are no in text citations according to any style guide. This is constructive feedback. I do truly appreciate this book and Dr. Haver.I bought this book because my doctors don’t understand or know this research, but without the references to the research, as a non doctor, I can’t prove to them that what I know is correct (what do I know, I don’t have a formal medical education or doctorate). I shouldn’t need to redo her research so I have proof to share with my physician. There is a reference list by chapter, but again, it’s a lot of work and I can’t always access the articles without a paid subscription to research journals (hence the need to follow basic research writing guidelines).I don’t think MDs have to write a dissertation so the author may not know this, but this is a little lazy and hurts the credibility of this work. I’m surprised the copyeditor didn’t insist this was needed.

My psychiatrist actually recommended this book. It is life changing. More information than I could have ever gotten from my GYN. Not that she’s not great but she’d never had had the time to explain all of this. The author is highly respected in her field. Well worth the money. I’d have needed eight appointments with my GYN. This is cheaper and better. Brought up excellent questions I needed to ask my GYN. This is one everyone Perimenopausal or menopausal should read this.

    so helpful!!!

(Karen Luten) This book has been a game changer for me! I have always been reluctant to go to the doctor and generally have ignored my body probably due to generally feeling good for most of my life until my early 50s!! Joint pain, hot flashes, hearing loss, belly fat…. This book helped me talk to my doctor and make some important diet changes! So grateful for all the research, testimonials and tips for life change found in this book!!

Changing the Way You Think About Midlife and Beyond

his is an absolute must-read for anyone navigating the complexities of menopause!!I was not prepared for perimenopause or menopause. I went through both with absolutely no assistance from my medical providers or conversations with friends. In looking back on that misadventure I can see why I nearly lost my mind. A lot has changed in 10 years… and menopause is FINALLY a topic hitting mainstream media. It’s about time.I applaud doctors like Dr. Mary Claire Haver, who are creating comprehensive guides (she is the creator of “The Galveston Diet” which I read and follow) for women managing transition. This is a must read, for all OB/Gyn’s, women, and men. Become more knowledgeable about the most important property you will ever own, your body!!Dr. Haver provides a a way forward to this inevitable hormonal change with clarity, compassion, and citings of comprehensive research. There is more than one treatment option to deal with the what feels like hundreds of symptoms. While I could have used all this info during at the beginning of my own journey, it is still helpful now. AND even more importantly, I can help women younger than me feel empowered to thrive through this transition… unlike me, who barely survived it.If there is a women in your life over the age of 35 purchase this book for her on her next birthday. It’s never to soon to be educated about your health.

    Finally!

Dr. Haver is finally giving women who are going through peri/menopause a voice. How many of us have gone to a doctor, only to be told our symptoms are “just menopause”? Or in other words, suck it up, old lady. I’ve felt dismissed, invisible, and powerless to do anything about the myriad of symptoms I was experiencing: swollen joints/frozen shoulder, miserable sleep, massive menstrual bleeding, and oooooh, the weight gain. My endocrinologist chuckled about the latter and said, “Oh, yes. It’s just the menopause 20. Like the freshman 15. Ha-ha!”Yeah. Hilarious.Thankfully, Dr. Haver does not consider what we’re going through to be “just menopause.” In four months, I’ve completely altered my body with The Galveston Diet, and I’m am now on the estrogen patch and progesterone. I finally recognize my body again!
