You have probably lived through most of these events.

Excellent read. Each chapter is easy to read, details a certain FBI case, and provides insights that we never learned from the press. Ruby Ridge, Jeffery Dahmer, Waco, 911, Edward Kemper, and the filming of Silence of the Lambs: I was drawn to this book by the Silence of the Lambs references, yet was surprised by all of the national crises that I have lived through, and that Jana Monroe has investigated. Her writing is clear and to the point with multiple insights that the national press never brought to light. Made me wish I had looked at the FBI more closely as a young man. I highly recommend.

Interesting and informative book for the lay person

Having been a Registered Medical-Legal Investigator for the Medical Examiner’s Office in Austin, Texas for 12 years, I can assure the reader of Jana Monroe’s expertise and experience in investigating deaths. I began my professional career as a Certified Physician Assistant and chose to go into the Law Enforcement aspect of medicine when an opportunity presented itself in the last 12 years before I retired. As Jana Monroe stated, the things that I observed, smelled and studied in investigating deaths certainly and without a doubt changed my life and taught me many lessons. After 4 years of retirement, I still experience some bad dreams and cannot unsee what I have seen. All in all, a very good book.

    Not quite wh

Jana knows what it’s like to be the only woman in the room. She was at one point the only woman in the FBI’s Behavioral Sciences Unit where she consulted on more than 850 cases over the years. Jana also worked with several celebrities to help them succeed in the films they were working on. Jana was the inspiration for Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs. This book shows how a woman can survive in the male dominated FBI.This is a hard book to review because it’s not true crime, it’s a memoir, and I struggle rating those. I was slightly misleading by the publisher that this was going to be true crime. I expected this book to go into some of the ins and outs of the serial killers that the FBI captured, but it really wasn’t about that. This book was more about the obstacles female law enforcement officers face. The writing wasn’t bad; however, I did find some of the chapter breaks to be a bit jarring and they didn’t really tie into the next chapter. This book would be the perfect book for a young woman to read before she goes into law enforcement. I enjoyed how the book also discussed the relationships that Jana had with her fellow law enforcement officers; it was heartwarming. I also enjoyed reading about the interactions that Jana had with celebrities over the years. If you are looking for an interesting memoir about strong women in law enforcement, then check this one out.

    Great read!!!!

Fast paced almost as fast as the life Jana had to lead to stay ahead of those she and her fellow FBI agents chased and caught.

    Easy read

I read this book in one weekend. It provided an insightful glimpse into the world of the FBI and the difficulties of being a woman in a male-dominated public service career.

Outstanding Career of an Exceptional Operator

Well written stories of a career which helped push the boundaries of the job and the acceptance of women in the FBI. This book certainly portrays the facts that women do have a primary function, intelligence and purpose in the fields of solving crimes and apprehending the criminals. A tip of the cap to all of them who are willing to place their lives on the line for others!

    Not what I expected.

This book was not what I expected. I was hoping for more info on the cases, not just a moment about them. The book was fine, mostly focused on the writers career placements, I prefer more detail on catching and how the mentality gets figured.

    Change

It was reaffirming to read Jana’s journey as a woman in a male environment., it was hard. Fighting the stereotypes, put downs, babysitting, constantly proving your worth and still persevering. Kudos for surviving and thriving. Clearly wading through evil took its toll, appreciate her and others that do so to keep me and the country safe.

    Entertaining and Well-Written.

This was a really good book with a lot of interesting stories for true crime fans. A unique perspective (one of the first females in the FBI Behavioral Unit) without being bogged down by it. A hidden gem!

An interesting book that reflects the pressures and difficulties of this career. It was particularly interesting looking at it through the eyes of an extremely successful female agent.

Excellent read, unless you’re ignoring the subtitle and expecting something very different!

I really enjoyed the book. It’s hard to put down once you start it. It’s very engaging, well written, and conforms well with the book’s subtitle. Those who have written negative reviews on it were obviously expecting something that is not indicated there, and are leveling criticisms out of left field. No, it’s not a rambling ego trip. She stays well focused on serial killers, the Behavioral Science Unit, and her life as a woman in the FBI! Some of these book reviews sure make me wonder about these people!

    Captivating insider story

We were fortunate to meet Jana in Los Angeles a few years ago. She is a fascinating person, and her background and stories are a great read. I’m not so entranced by FBI methodology, but Monroe’s action-packed assignments made for a stimulating page-turner. Very entertaining and colorful.

    Riveting and True!!!

“Hearts of Darkness” by Jana is an absolute masterpiece that will leave you breathless from start to finish. This book takes readers on an exhilarating journey through Jana’s remarkable career as one of the first female profilers in the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit. From the very first page, I was completely captivated by Jana’s story of perseverance and breaking down barriers. Her path to becoming a profiler was filled with challenges, but her determination and unwavering spirit shine through every chapter. Jana’s ability to overcome obstacles and pave the way for future generations is truly inspiring. What sets “Hearts of Darkness” apart is the behind-the-scenes look at Jana’s influence on popular culture. I was fascinated to learn how she coached Jodie Foster for her iconic role as Clarisse Starling in “Silence of the Lambs.” The impact Jana had on this spine-chilling film is truly astounding and added an extra layer of excitement to the book. The book doesn’t shy away from the harsh realities of Jana’s work either. She fearlessly confronted the hearts of darkness and dealt with the continuous exposure to evil deeds. Her candid and honest storytelling gave me a profound understanding of the toll it takes on us all who served. It was a sobering yet eye-opening experience. But “Hearts of Darkness” goes beyond law enforcement. Jana’s expertise extends to all aspects of our lives, and she brilliantly explores the application of profiling. From understanding human behavior to making informed decisions, Jana’s insights are invaluable and will leave readers with a fresh perspective on navigating the complexities of the world. The writing in “Hearts of Darkness” is exceptional. Jana’s storytelling is gripping and filled with suspense, making it impossible to put the book down. Each chapter is meticulously crafted, and the pacing keeps readers on the edge of their seats, eager to uncover the next revelation. In conclusion, “Hearts of Darkness” is an absolute must-read. Jana’s incredible journey, groundbreaking achievements, and influence on popular culture make for a thrilling and unforgettable book. It will inspire, captivate, and enlighten readers, leaving them with a renewed appreciation for the resilience of the human spirit. Don’t miss out on this extraordinary tale that will keep you hooked until the very end.

    Great Audiobook

As for Hearts of Darkness, all I can say is wow. I absolutely loved this audiobook. Jana tells a very intimate story of what is was like to be one of the only female FBI agents in the Behavioral Science Unit and what it was like to track down serial killers, terrorists and setting sale for assignments on a moments notice. This book was as interesting as it sounds. The grabber for me when looking into this book before receiving an ARC was, of course, that Clarice Starling (Jodi Foster) of Silence of the Lambs was based on Jana Monroe. Silence of the Lambs is arguably one of the most iconic (and absolutely awesome) movies of the early 90’s. I of course loved Foster’s character, and thus wanted to know more about the real Clarice.I loved the PACE of the book- there were longer chapters and shorter chapter depending on the subject that was being discussed. It was almost like a memoir of stories (from how she got into the FBI, then the BSU, then one of major profiles, then out of the FBI) and all that in-between. Each story was told in fantastic detail, although not cumbersomely detailed, and incredibly personal. If I were to describe this memoir in an elevator speech, I would say: Hearts of Darkness is like reading/listening to your favorite murder podcaster who has actually solved some of the murders and dived deep into the depravity that is the darkness of humankind firsthand. That being said, if you are a fellow murderino, true crime lover or memoir reader, I would 100% recommend Hearts of Darkness.I also have to note that the audiobook was fantastic. The narration, Hillary Huber was great. I will in fact be looking into other audiobook she narrated because this narration was one of the best I’ve ever listened to. Audiobook readers, you know how often books read by their authors tend to be narrated more passionately, personally and sincerely….well Huber’s narration for this memoir was so good that I kept forgetting that it wasn’t read by the author.I in fact have already recommended this book already, and recommend it to you too!

A very well written disturbing and highly informative!!!

Hearts of Darkness was incredibly good. It was deeply insightful and chronicles some of the worst cases set before the newly formed BAU and the first woman to join there ranks. It was heart breaking, inspiring and profoundly educational not only as crimes are solved (or not) but in the knowledge gleaned from the criminal minds of the Hearts of Darkness our author hunted during her distinguished career. If you like true crime the book is a must read and I highly recommend reading it!

Jana Monroe is my new hero

Jana Monroe’s history with the FBI was an incredibly inspiring story. Each chapter was more riveting than the last. Any one who is a true crime fan should definitely check this book out. The narrator also made the listening experience a fabulous one! Jana may just be my new hero. I loved getting a peek into her life.

    False Info

I was in the 1st cadre of Special Agents who were hand-picked from offices in the Field (59 at the time) in 1984 or 85. I’m now 78, nearly 10 yrs. older than Ms. Monroe. The ‘consultation’ she claims to have done on Ed Kemper, Ted Bundy et al, pre-dated my EOD (entry on duty) in 1979. In our initial training for what was then called “Psychological Profiling,” we studied Kemper and Bundy’s crimes, plus many other serial killers. “Studying” these killers was far different than ‘consulting.’ Ms. Monroe probably would have been in her teens when she ‘consulted’ on these and other cases..!!Ms. Monroe would appear to give one the impression that she was the 1st female in the Beh. Science Unit, which is patently untrue. I could name several others, at least 3 of whom were members of my ‘original’ class of Field Profilers. Claiming to have consulted on the immense number of cases she claimed to have done, cannot be true. My best guess is she looked over some of these files in the office.I haven’t read this book, but judging from the summary provided on Amazon, it is (as one reviewer above says) “self-aggrandizing, and probably a complete fabrication. I don’t think I’ll spend 12.00 to buy it, even on Kindle.Pete Klismet, FBI 1979 to 1999.Author of: FBI Diary, Profiles of Evil….FBI Diary, Home Grown Terror… Profiling Violent Crime (with Dr. Clarissa Cole) – a college and university textbook.

    Just okay

This is less a story about serial killers and more a story of the difficulties of being a woman in a male dominated career. I don’t discount that struggle but not what I wanted to read about. I found the book difficult to follow, and finish. The timelines are jumbled, she jumps back and forth a lot, stating remember when I talked about so and so….I bet she had a wild career but maybe should have hired a writer to tell the story. Would not recommend.

    Disappointed

I thought the book would be more into her dealings with serial killers , instead, it was more about other aspects of her life. At times boring ….. It tended to be repetitive at times (I.e. yes you were with the behavioral unit for 5 years; yes you were the only female ; yes you were ignored at times and had to work your way up).

    Very disappointing.

This is not the book I expected. I thought the book would get into the meat and potatoes of the cases Jana Monroe worked on. Instead, it was a book that stroked her ego. I keep reading in hopes this changes.

Book was a good hype but not what I expected

I expected more about her dealing with the cases not her life and how she got to the FBI… pretty disappointing. Expected more about actual cases.

Not worth the time or money

This book was not at all what it is being advertised as. It was boring, repetitive, and completely unorganized. I felt like I was reading a high school freshman’s poorly written essay that just would not end! I got about halfway through but just couldn’t bring myself to care enough to finish reading it. I don’t know what these 5-star reviewers read, but it couldn’t have been this book…

    Fabulously Done!

I absolutely LOVED this book! It was interesting to hear about the progression that the author took through her career. Starting out as a police officer, and then moving into the FBI, she has been involved in some of the biggest cases in American history. Her work in the behavior science unit, and the different paths that she took throughout her career were extremely interesting.Highly recommend this book!

    interesting read

The book is well-written and kept my attention. HOWEVER, 1) the book has a very limited portion about silence of the lambs. It does not go into the details. It also does not go into details of other serial killers but is more about Jana herself. I feel it is a bait and switch, similar to Barbara Butcher’s book (What the dead know). 2) It seems that every page in the book has a comment on how the FBI is a man’s world, she was the first woman, she was treated like the coffee girl, blah blah blah. That got old in the very first chapter. Therefore, 2 stars. Disclaimer: I borrowed this book from the Hoopla glad I didn’t buy it.

    Jana Is A Total Bada**

I loved getting to know Jana and the things she accomplished in the bureau. She’s bright, funny, and real. As a woman in her twenties, it’s easy to forget that women in law enforcement is a relatively new concept. I’m forever grateful for the women like Jana who paved the way for generations like mine.

    excellent autobiographical work

I loved the author’s voice and although the material was gruesome at times, she was able to communicate her story without being sensationalist. She’s clearly proud of her service to our country and I’m thankful for that, too.If you’re the least bit squeamish you might want to skip over some of the details.

I couldn’t get past the first third of the book

I thought the book was about the authors time at the FBI working on cases about serial killers. Spoiler Alert: The first third of the book is the author whining about how tough it was to be a female cop during the early part of her career. while I have no doubt that’s true after she mentions it for the 30th time without mentioning more than a few passing pages about her time at the FBI i set the book aside. I didn’t buy the the book to read about the suffrage movement, as important as it was, that was the subject I came to read about. I’ll donate the book to Goodwill. Lesson learned.
